HAP Adds Industry Experts John Gorman and Jeff Chaffkin to Board of Directors

Industry leaders bring national expertise to Detroit-based health plan

DETROIT - Health Alliance Plan, a Detroit-based nonprofit health plan, announced today that nationally-recognized industry experts John Gorman and Jeff Chaffkin have been appointed to the HAP Board of Directors.

John GormanGorman is the founder and former executive chairman at Gorman Health Group (GHG) in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a leading professional services and solutions firm for government-sponsored health care, where he led the development and launch of several entrepreneurial ventures in both software and business process outsourcing in government health programs. He has more than 25 years of experience in government-sponsored health program strategy, compliance and operations.

Prior to founding GHG, Gorman served as assistant to the director of Health Care Financing Administration’s Office of Managed Care, where he provided day-to-day management and served as the external liaison for the Medicare and Medicaid managed care programs. A native of Detroit, his early career included serving as press secretary and staff director for U.S. Representative John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), then-Chairman of the Government Operations Committee.

Gorman is a popular speaker, sharing his predictions about the evolving government-sponsored managed care market with senior health care executives across the U.S. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in government and economics from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.


Jeff headshotChaffkin currently serves as senior healthcare advisor to XMS Capital Partners, a global, independent financial services firm with offices in Chicago, London and Dublin that provides investment banking, asset management and merchant banking services. He also serves on the board of Glenridge Healthcare Solutions, a leading provider of network development, management, compliance and optimization services.

With more than 30 years of experience in health care investing and finance, Chaffkin previously served as a portfolio manager at Charter Oak Partners and also held a variety of executive positions at Aetna, Inc., including chief financial officer of the health business unit of Aetna Health Plans and vice president of planning and business development for Aetna International. He also was a managing director and U.S. pharmaceutical analyst at UBS in New York. Chaffkin holds a Bachelor of Science degree and MBA in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
